Clutch Ya´ax

Small woven bag made of Henequen, a fiber from the native agave of the Yucatan peninsula, on a waist loom. It has a large carved horn button that accentuates the color of the fibers. The bag is a contemporary application of centuries of history and knowledge.

Horn carving was introduced in the Viceroyalty in Mexico and has been perfected over time by the Mayans. Today it is a technique recognized worldwide, typical of Yucatan, which uses only recovered material. The technique of the Mayan backstrap loom was developed in the western mountains of Guatemala before the arrival of the Spaniards. The technique consists of weaving cotton threads with a pair of sticks that, little by little, form a cloth with the weaver‘s movement to the rhythm of the rods‘ swaying. Henequen, being a fiber with qualities such as flexibility, softness, and durability, makes it the perfect raw material for working with this technique.
